- WHAT IS IT?
Pre-authorized tax payment plans are a hassle free way to pay for your property taxes without having too much to worry about. Depending on the city, your property taxes would be withdrawn from a valid Canadian bank account that you specify at a designated time period in small instalments (as opposed to paying one large lump sum annually). The advantage to the pre-authorized tax payment plan is that there is little hassle associated with remembering to pay property taxes, as well as the fact that the smaller payments make it a lot easier to pay, especially with other bills and expenses.
- WHERE IS IT AVAILABLE?
Pre-authorized tax payment plans are now typically available in most cities and towns. It is important to check your municipality’s local website for more information regarding how your property taxes can be paid.
- WHEN CAN YOU PAY?
Payment plans are flexible based on the city. Some places, such as the city of Toronto, have different instalment plans. For example, Toronto offers a 2
-installment plan, a 6-installment plan and an 11-installment plan. This means that you can either opt to pay your annual property taxes in 2 large chunks (2-installment plan), 6 smaller payments (6-installment plan) or lastly monthly (11-installment plan). Alternately, you are still more than welcome to opt for paying in one lump sum if you choose. It is important to look at the city you are living in to determine the flexibility of the payment plan you are eligible to opt for.
- WHY IS THIS A GOOD OPTION?
Choosing to go with pre-authorized tax payment plans are convenient and easy. There is a lot of flexibility associated with the number of payments, and even the date of payment. For example, the city of Mississauga allows you to choose one of four dates that property tax costs can be withdrawn from your account – so if you get paid every other week, you can opt to go for a date that is closer to your normal pay days.
- HOW DO I LEARN MORE?
You can sign up by either faxing in a completed enrolment form, and some towns even offer the ability to sign up online. For more information, please see the links above with the various cities listed. If not, just go to your city or town’s website.
